Sustainability at Fortress Hohenwerfen Castle
Sustainability is a term that is often used today and - in the opinion of some - (over)used. And perhaps the question arises, especially in the case of a building that is over 900 years old: are a castle and the idea of sustainability a contradiction in terms ? As the keepers and operators of various castles and palaces, we are convinced of this: This is definitely not a contradiction!
On the contrary, one of the key sustainability issues - what can be done today to protect the resources of future generations - is extremely important for a castle. After all, the preservation of cultural resources is undoubtedly of enormous importance for future generations. Even if a fortress sometimes presents us with unusual challenges in our daily activities.
As we know, the idea of sustainability offers various areas in which we can meet these challenges: in the field of ecological measures, in the area of economic activity or in social tasks. In this way, as a tourism institution with roots in the Middle Ages, we are able to build a bridge from the Middle Ages through the present and into the future from various starting points.
As the administration of castles and palaces, we carry out sustainability monitoring in all our properties. In addition, we subject the goals we have set ourselves to an annual review. With the overarching aim of improving at all levels.
For us at the Burgen- und Schlösserverwaltung, sustainability also means that we are constantly learning. And that we adapt to changing requirements. In times of rapid change, sustainability is a dynamic process for us that we regularly evaluate and, above all, continue to develop in the future.
